More Than A Trip: How Volunteering Tunisia Redefined Touko’s World

The fear of the unknown is a feeling humanity has held since the dawn of time. Overcoming this would surely change anyone’s life.
A whole new world. Unfamiliar language, culture and customs. Witnessing something new with every look. You wonder whether you’ll truly belong, whether the experience will be meaningful, or if you’ll feel like an outsider passing through.
These thoughts raced through Touko’s mind as she stepped out of the airport. But luckily for her, she was not alone in this journey. Waiting diligently for her at the nearby coffee shop were her chaperone group of AIESEC Tunisia members, ready to give her a hearty welcome!
That moment set the tone for her entire journey; she was part of something international, inclusive, and truly horizon-broadening. Touko was more than ready to rock the world, and AIESEC would always be there for her.
Through our Global Classroom program, she spent her time as a teacher’s aide for junior Tunisian students, supporting them with their studies. While she taught them Mandarin, they taught her French and Arabic. Their excitement, curiosity, and openness made every session meaningful. Seeing them happy to spend time with her reminded her of why she chose this journey in the first place.
Beyond teaching, Tunisia itself became her classroom; learning through experiencing the new culture, forming strong friendships with people from different backgrounds, and constantly practising the language.
Each conversation pushed her to improve herself: listening skills, express herself more clearly, and grow her confidence.
By the time she left Tunisia, she realised this experience had given her more than memories. It gave her perspective.
