What is Covid-19

COVID-19 or what is commonly known as the Novel Coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that belongs to the large family of coronaviruses (COV), they cause various illnesses starting with the common cold to more dangerous and severe ones, like the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV) and severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). The Novel Coronavirus (nCoV) was first identified in China on December 2019. It initially occurred in a group of people with pneumonia who have been associated with a seafood and live animal market in the city of Wuhan, the disease has since then spread from those who were sick to other including family members and healthcare staff, since then the number of cases has gotten higher and higher, the official numbers from the World Health Organization when this article was written show that there are 666,211 confirmed cases globally from which 30,864 deaths have been reported and 141,789 number of recoveries. As for the United Kingdom the number of confirmed cases in 17,315 with 1,021 reported deaths and 151 number of recoveries.

Concerning the transmission of the virus, the exact dynamics are yet to be determined but in general respiratory viruses are usually transmitted through droplets created when as infected person coughs or sneezes or through something that has been contaminated with the virus. For the symptoms, COVID-19 has some common symptoms with both the cold and flu, but the most known symptoms for the coronavirus are, shortness of breath, dry cough and fever.

In order to stay healthy and well, you need to take some precautions such as staying at home and respecting the quarantine rules and not going out unless it is very necessary, keeping your hands clean by washing them regularly and using a hand sanitizer, if you have to go out please make sure to avoid crowded areas and unnecessary contact with other, keep a distance from sick people and avoid contact with living or dead animals, if you feel any of the symptoms make sure to call a doctor and don’t go straight to the hospital without previous warning.

As for traveling domestically or Internationally, please avoid travel if you have a fever and cough, follow all the precautions mentioned before, eat only well cooked food and avoid spitting in public, if you become sick while traveling make sure to inform crew and seek medical care as early as possible.

Finally, I would want to end this article with a quote from the director-General of the World Health Organization Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesusas as he quotes “We are in this together to do the right things with calm and protect the citizens of the world, it is doable”
