Watching the new season of Game of Thrones.
Collecting as many Pokemon as you can.
Getting through the semester with enough attendance.
The best part is that these aren’t just my goals. These are my team’s goals. These are my local committee’s goals. These are every AIESECer’s goals, across the globe and that’s what’s unites us in our endeavour to achieve them.
We millennials are special creatures. We’re in between the previous generation and the next and that’s what sets us apart. That’s what makes us who we are. It makes us all the more determined to do what we want. I mean, come on, when we set our hearts to something, we pretty much get it, by the end. And if we don’t, we keep trying, till we get there. That’s why we get there. We don’t know what it means to give up.
But, we do that only when we know what we want. What do we do when we don’t know what we want? We float around the day, getting through everyday week after week, month after month not knowing what to do, trying to find comfort in things that make us happy in the moment but don’t make us feel content and satisfied in the long run.
There’s so much going on around the world that we’re oblivious to. Venezuela’s political crisis for example. More than a 100 people have died in the last few months due to the government instability. Look at USA’s and North Korea’s relationship – they’re at each other’s necks threatening to start the next world war. A glacier in Antarctica three times the size of London broke away from it’s shelf due to the rising temperatures. In the last decade, an unprecedented 59 million people have been forced out of their homes and are refugees in other countries now. Hunger and malnutrition are the number one health risk worldwide. Women in the labour market still earn a quarter less than men on an average, globally.
We at AIESEC firmly believe that leadership is the fundamental solution to everything and change doesn’t start elsewhere – it starts with you. With our presence in more than 130 countries, we are doing our bit to achieve the Global Goals by 2030 but we can’t do it without the help of the youth of the world. It’s only when we come together that we are going to be a movement. If not, we’re just all bark and no bite. And it’s high time we start biting (I’m kidding. Please don’t actually bite anyone.)
We need you, more than anything. We need you to work towards the community, breaking boundaries and stereotypes and achieve not just your goals, but our goals – The Global Goals. Because if you don’t, who will?
