What's The Story?

"My greatest passion is travelling. Since a very early age, I have a tremendous hunger to discover other cultures, other languages, other people. AIESEC found the perfect match with my schedule and wishes: an Education Traineeship in Shanghai seemed like a dream to me... It was then up to ME to commit myself in pursuing my dreams which I knew would not be possible without AIESEC..."

FAQ

AIESEC brings highly skilled and experienced graduates who are based overseas to work on placements in local firms. Why should your organisation use the AIESEC programme as opposed to other ways of recruiting graduates?

Why should I recruit overseas graduates, using AIESEC’s scheme, as opposed to those from the UK?
-         Our scheme gives organisations access to graduates with far greater skills and experience than can be can recruited in the UK alone. First degrees in many other countries tend to be 5 years long as opposed to 3 years in the UK meaning that overseas graduates are more skilled and do more work placements in their own countries. There is also more of a culture of gaining experience in ones’ own country post graduation in certain countries (e.g. Brazil). Hence the AIESEC graduates that would be working for you would typically have 1-2 years of working experience
-         Out of all the countries that AIESEC works in, the UK remains a very popular destination for the graduates on our scheme. Due to this interest in the UK, we are able to obtain the best of the best graduates available globally
-         Graduates from overseas can bring foreign language skills and market knowledge to your company, which is very beneficial – not only for working with international clients but also taking on overseas customers. There are many examples of companies who have brought in AIESEC graduates for the sole purpose of expanding their business into a new country in a cost-effective manner (as the interns can talk to overseas clients in their own language).
-         AIESEC graduates are future leaders. They have passed a rigorous selection procedure and have strong team skills, an open mind, the ability to deal with change and an international perspective. IT skills are also directly transferable across borders.

Isn’t it a hassle bringing over overseas graduates?
-         This is where AIESEC comes in. We sort out accommodation, work permits, visas, NI number, bank account, flights, administration and all the other hassle and we look after the graduate whilst they are in the UK. All you need to be concerned about is the work that the graduate will be doing.

Why placements? What if I only want to recruit for permanent positions?
-         Our scheme is for placements only – the company chooses the length of the placement (can be between 2-18 months). However, if you are keen to use our scheme for permanent recruitment, you can simply employ the graduate permanently after the placement ends. The placement gives you the opportunity to assess the graduate for a period of time in a working environment before you recruit them permanently.

The graduates are from overseas, how will I assess them before I take them on?
-         The standard procedure for companies, who wish to participate in our scheme, is that they do a telephone interview as well as request a motivational letter or sample work.
-         If you like, we can bring over the graduates for a face-to-face interview. Bridgestone, (see case study) requested that we arrange this. Flights and other expenses incurred were paid for by Bridgestone.
-         All our graduates are fluent in English (a requirement of being on the scheme), which can be assessed during the phone interview.

What’s the next step?
-         The next step is to give us a call and have a good chat with us so we can understand where you’re coming from and what exactly you’re looking for. Then you would complete our job specification form with what you want the graduate to do and the details of the placement. If you provide us with your own job description, we can fill most of the form for you and we can also pop in to your offices to help you complete it.

What are the costs?
-         Salary. During the placement, you can pay the AIESEC intern what you like with a minimum of £900-£1000/month (£11000+/year) after tax (which we find is the bare minimum to cover the costs of living during the graduates stay, outside of London). This makes the AIESEC scheme excellent value for money as a very skilled individual can work for you at less than what most companies pay graduates normally. And our graduates are not just fresh out of university.
-         Admin fee. AIESEC is a not-for-profit organisation run by students at 1100 universities around the world. To cover our expenses of finding accommodation, work permits, work registration costs, reception, meeting the intern at the airport, servicing the intern and the management costs of our National Office in London, AIESEC charges an administration fee. This is varies with the placement length, and is £1500 plus VAT for a 12 month placement Again, this is great value for money, given the quality of the graduate (comparable to more senior professionals in most cases) and the unlimited level of service AIESEC provides.

Do other companies use the AIESEC scheme?
-         Locally, we work with SMEs, charities and other organisations. Nationally and globally, we work with Microsoft, HP, Alcatel, Oracle, Motorola and many other multinationals.
-         Companies who have their own graduate recruitment scheme find that AIESEC complements their own scheme thanks to the skilled and experienced personnel we offer. These companies use our scheme as a pipeline of young international talent to become the future leaders of the company.

Who supports AIESEC?
-         AIESEC is recommended by many Chambers of Commerce around the UK and business organisations and support services at the local level. These bodies recognise our scheme’s value to local firms and hence refer companies on to us whom they feel could benefit.

How does this fit with my organisation’s commitment to positively influencing the community and society?
-         By employing an AIESEC intern, not only will you be helping AIESEC fulfil its mission to develop socially responsible business leaders, but you will be enabling our work with local charities and schools and skills and leadership training for students. As a result, many companies partner with AIESEC because they recognise the strength of the organisation in developing future leaders.
