Undergrads: Stop thinking. Start acting outside the box.

April 19th, 2013 by

It feels like a rough time to be a graduate in most parts of the world. In some parts of Europe, the youth unemployment rate is around 50 per cent of the 16-24 demographic. In the UK, if you look at three of your friends, chances are that one of you will not have a job after graduation. The world where you land your dream job after graduation simply does not exist anymore. It is not enough to be just a university graduate.

So how do you start to stand out from the crowd? In my experience, it is something you need to start working on at the beginning of your undergraduate degree. You need to think outside the box, or at least the classroom. Here are my three tips on how to stand out from the crowd, and possibly learn more about yourself in the process: (more…)

“Informal learning” outside the classroom is key to clinching a good first job

March 22nd, 2013 by

For today’s students, acquiring the skills and knowledge to operate in a global economy is vital. Classroom learning is no longer sufficient preparation for most professions. To be attractive to fast-paced global organizations, young people need real-world experience, leadership skills and a global mindset by the time they graduate.

The best way to gain all three is by working in a foreign culture – outside your comfort zone – where every day brings challenges, problem-solving and personal growth. AIESEC, a global youth network for leadership development, offers that experience by placing students and graduates in international internships with companies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). THE WORLD IS CARING

KONY 2012 received a phenomenal outpour of emotion when a 30 minute video exploded onto the internet about a year ago today. The video and campaign pulled a huge following and then suddenly, the conversation became about whether or not Invisible Children, the charity that released the video, were spending their resources in the best way or not. The impact model of the campaign came into huge question, and a lot of the momentum was lost.

This post has nothing to do with the campaign, but is connected to a concept that it revealed.

The Impact of Youth in the world

October 11th, 2012 by

When looking at this video by Natalie Warne about being young and having an impact,  the word that sprang to my mind and kept me thoughtful was Anonymous Extraordinaries. They are those people that would do anything to help achieve the things they believe in. They don’t look for recognition, they look for impact, they want to have an impact on the world, on the causes they believe in. (more…)

Access Tier 5

October 11th, 2012 by

Tier 5 government authorised exchange category is for people coming to the UK through approved programmes that aim to share knowledge, best practice, and to experience the social & cultural life in the UK. Access Tier 5 is a unique and one of the only few authorised programmes that can provide true flexibility within the Tier 5 Government Authorised Exchange (GAE) category for business immigration. It is designed specifically to allow organizations to facilitate internships for highly skilled non-EEA candidates, pre selected and sourced by the organizations themselves, which has been challenging since the removal of Training & Work Experience Scheme.

As a kid I always wanted to be President of my own club, so that I could make decisions and accomplish what I thought would be useful. So in my first year at LSE when an inquiry came in from AIESEC about starting a program in the UK, of course, I volunteered.

What is Entrepreneurship?

September 13th, 2012 by

Entrepreneurship is really hard to define, since for each one this word has a different meaning. Is it all about willing to start something? Is it about putting ideas in action? Webster defines an entrepreneur as: “one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise”. (more…)

My AIESEC story started back in 2006, when I threw myself into University life in Cardiff. My first AIESEC conference involved jumping on a bus to Norfolk with a group of strangers. I sat beside the friendliest amongst them; a curly haired English girl called Naomi. Little did I know that 1 month later I would have started my first business with a few of these ‘strangers’. Fighting youth unemployment

May 20th, 2012 by

One of the global issues that holds a constant place high up on the agenda is youth unemployment, fueling fears that today’s young people could become tomorrow’s “lost generation”.

Youth unemployment in the UK and worldwide

In November 2011, the UK’s youth unemployment has gone over the million mark. 22.5% of 16 to 25 year-olds are jobless, which is also the highest level since records began in 1992, according to the Office for National Statistics.

How AIESEC can challenge mindsets

May 2nd, 2012 by

In AIESEC we know lots of people who discovered a new way to see the world, and inside this new way, found that their skills and competences could be developed beyond the imaginable. This is one of them, Stefanie Gösele, alumnus from AIESEC Germany:

“AIESEC is, in my opinion, the first choice for young people who want to develop their personalities and broaden their horizons. Among the most important skills and qualities that a student can acquire in AIESEC are leadership skills and entrepreneurship.

When I was younger, I was completely lacking an entrepreneurial mindset and considered myself incapable of ever managing business of my own. Then I joined AIESEC.

The Global South

May 2nd, 2012 by

The Global South, also known as the Third World, the North-South Divide, The Rich-Poor divide, is a sad reality in the world today. AIESEC is present in many of these countries, and in some, for instance India, it has thrived, giving much to their society.

But the beauty of AIESEC is that it does not just enable the Global North to affect the Global South, the affect is also the other way around. The introduction of these countries into AIESEC have given much to our culture. Roll Calls – fun and funny introductions of each country – were originally introduced by AIESEC Africa.
Here is the story of one AIESECer from AIESEC Nigeria, and how AIESEC and the mobility AIESEC has allowed him has affected him, and how he has gone on to affect a developed country – the Czech Republic.
